MADD 4 MHD: A New Initiative to Combat Drinking and Driving in Marblehead
When Cynthia Belmer heard about the tragic crash that took the life of 13-year-old Savanah Gatchell last month, she was unable to sleep. Staying up all night, she researched ways to prevent future tragedies. This led to the formation of MADD 4 MHD, a group of local moms and teens dedicated to addressing drinking and driving in their town.

Belmer, a mother of three, shared her story and the group’s mission with the Marblehead Current. She hopes to raise awareness among teens about two laws that encourage them to call for help rather than engage in risky behaviors like drinking and driving.
“My husband was born and raised here, and he lost one or two of his classmates in a similar way,” Belmer told the Current. “Knowing that my kids are going to be exposed to this town culture, I had to do something.”
Belmer’s flyer, which outlines the laws, is a powerful tool in their efforts to make a positive change.
