An unidentified man was shot early Monday morning after he approached Ashland police officers with a knife following allegedly vandalizing numerous businesses.

2 a.m. Incident

Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of A Street around 2 a.m. following reports of a business alarm, according to a Monday morning news release from Ashland police. Upon arrival, officers encountered a lone suspect exiting the area of multiple businesses with shattered storefront windows.

Confrontation and Shooting

The suspect approached the officers while armed with a knife. One of the officers fired his department-issued sidearm at the suspect, striking him, who was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center for treatment by Ashland Fire & Rescue.

Ashland Police Chief Tighe O’Meara said in a phone interview on Monday, Oct. 26, that the suspect who was shot is a white male in his 30s. He declined to share his name at this time. O’Meara also stated it is too early to say whether the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on leave, but such action is standard procedure in police-involved shootings.

Investigation

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is handling this investigation, and additional information will be released at a later time by the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.
