Better Business Bureau Warns of Scams Targeting Job Seekers

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is cautioning individuals to be vigilant against a recent scam related to job opportunities. People have reported receiving deceptive offers, leading them to share personal information and engage in suspicious activities.

In this scam, "employers" initially contact individuals, promising job opportunities. However, the process takes a peculiar turn when the "hired" applicants are instructed to:

  1. Receive shipments.
  2. Open the boxes, inspect the contents, and then repackage and relabel them.
  3. Ship the boxes back.

Frank Cilona, President and CEO of the BBB in the Canton region, emphasizes the importance of being cautious when encountering such offers, especially during these uncertain economic times.

"Remember, legitimate employers will never ask for personal information upfront or involve you in such unusual packaging and shipping tasks," Cilona warns.

If you encounter similar job offers, Cilona recommends the following:

  • Verify the employer's legitimacy: Research the company independently to ensure it is a real organization.
  • Be wary of urgent requests: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure victims into acting quickly.
  • Protect your personal information: Never share sensitive details like Social Security numbers or financial data unless absolutely necessary and through secure channels.
