City of Monticello Rescinds Southern Business District
By Editor | October 15, 2026
The City of Monticello unexpectedly rescinded its Southern Business District zoning designation during a special-called meeting on Wednesday, October 7.
The Southern Business District
The Southern Business District was established to facilitate industrial development within the city limits. The initial plans included defining data centers within the district. However, due to unmet advertisement requirements, the city chose to postpone any revision hearings.
Uncertainty Surrounding the Vote
Council Member Jenny Murphy moved to rescind the zoning district, but the decision lacks clear reasoning. The vote was made in a closed-doors executive session, citing potential litigation.
It remains unclear which, if any, parcels are affected by this rescission, particularly the city-owned Mine Lake property, a contested site.
Ongoing Investigations
This vote occurred one day before the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was set to review the city's finances, focusing on utility billing processes, according to the GBI's Special Agent in Charge.
