Entrepreneurship

In a recent episode of "Office Hours," a faculty spotlight series, Rory McDonald, United Technologies Corporation Associate Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, discussed understanding disruptive strategy and innovation.

Business is filled with David-versus-Goliath stories, from classic underdog battles to corporate takeovers and market showdowns. For McDonald, these narratives present ample opportunities to explore disruption in the classroom using real-world examples.

"If you think about it logically, it shouldn't happen. David should not be able to beat Goliath, and yet it happens again and again across industries. The question is: How does that happen? And if I'm a David: How do I do this? How can I be successful in a market that is dominated by these deep-pocketed incumbents?"

McDonald teaches these concepts in his elective, "Disruptive Strategy and Innovation," where he equips MBA students with the tools to create disruptive strategies.

Strategy: The Building Block of Business

McDonald defines strategy as an "integrating mechanism" within an organization, requiring consideration of financial, accounting, marketing, operations, and leadership.

"It's very difficult to make a strategic decision if you don't also incorporate... considerations," he explains. "The reality is that some organizations perform better than others, and I'm interested in why."

Case Study: Airbus Versus Boeing

McDonald enjoys teaching an old case study, "Airbus Versus Boeing", published in 2016, which offers timeless insights into duopolies and strategic decision-making.

The case centers on the 1990s airline industry, where uncertainty around demand and technology forced companies to consider their competitors' moves. Students analyze the projects' net present value, highlighting the strategic complexity of duopolies.

From Disruption to Strategy

McDonald joined Darden in 2024, bringing a decade of experience from Harvard Business School, where he collaborated with the late Clayton Christensen, author of "The Innovator's Dilemma". They co-authored "What Is Disruptive Innovation?" and developed the course "Disruptive Strategy."
