Robert Evert, assistant professor for strategy and entrepreneurship, and co-authors had their paper, "Initial international entry timing: The effects of family control and firm performance," published in Journal of Small Business Management. Their paper examines how family ownership influences when a company first expands into an international market. They analyzed 472 firms between 2006 and 2019 to better understand whether family-controlled businesses approach international expansion differently than other companies.
They found family firms tended to enter international markets earlier than non-family firms. However, this correlation becomes more complex as family ownership increased; firms with higher levels of family control tended to delay their first international expansion. This study provides a more nuanced understanding of how family ownership and firm performance can shape a company’s decision about when to expand internationally.
