I don’t volunteer at my daughter’s school. It’s better for both of us. – Business Insider

I Tried to Be the Perfect School Volunteer Mom. My Kids Don’t Remember It.

By Elise Seyfried

In her essay, the author reflects on her years of dedicated volunteer work at her children’s school, only to realize her kids don’t remember it.

During the many years my five children were in elementary school, I devoted myself—and exhausted myself—to volunteering weekly. Whether it was in their classrooms, organizing events, or managing committees, I was there. I believed that by immersing myself in their school life, I’d create lasting memories and become "The Better Parent."

My "second career" began when my oldest started kindergarten. I joined the KC team, participated in reading programs, and helped with various activities. Even with a newborn, I ensured I was present at every event, from Fun with Plants to the Halloween Parade.

However, as time passed, I realized something crucial: My kids don’t remember these efforts. In fact, they barely recall specific events or my presence. This realization struck me deeply, prompting introspection and self-reflection.

While there were rewarding aspects to volunteering, I now understand that my dedication might have been misguided. The author questions whether her excessive involvement was truly beneficial for her children’s development and memories. She concludes by acknowledging the value of quality time over quantity in parenting.
