ICE raids cast chilling shadow over New Bedford immigrant businesses - The Boston Globe

It's a Mess': New Bedford Businesses Reel as ICE Detentions Escalate

New Bedford businesses, particularly in the bustling Acushnet Avenue area, have been significantly impacted by recent US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, with at least 24 people arrested. These raids, which occurred on September 22, have left a chilling effect on the community.

Iris de la Rosa, owner of Mexican restaurant Taqueria La Raza, shared her concerns about the decline in customers since one of these raids, stating, "If the business continues like that, I think I have to close the door because it’s too much." The financial strain is real, as she struggles to pay bills and mortgages.

The impact extends beyond individual businesses. The overall atmosphere in the area has changed, with locals avoiding the area due to the increased ICE activity. One witness even blew an orange whistle in the face of an ICE officer as a protest.

In a broader context, these raids underscore ongoing debates around immigration policy, power dynamics, and inequality in the United States. They also shed light on the social and economic toll that such actions can have on communities, especially those with a significant immigrant population.
