Inflation Jumps to 3.7% as Gas and Diesel Prices Squeeze Consumers Ahead of the Midterms

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported on Wednesday that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.7% from a year ago, marking a significant increase in overall prices across the U.S. economy. This surge is largely attributed to high energy costs stemming from the ongoing Iran war.

Key Findings:

  • Year-over-Year Increase: Prices across broad sectors increased by 3.7% compared to September 2025.
  • Monthly Change: There was a 0.6% rise in prices from August to September.
  • Top Influencers: Housing, clothing, and restaurant and takeout food categories experienced notable price hikes.
  • Declines: Only groceries, medical care commodities, and utility gas service showed price decreases.

"The index for gasoline rose 9.1 percent in September, accounting for over half of the monthly all items increase," the BLS noted in their report.

This latest CPI report comes ahead of the midterm elections in November, with consumers and business owners expressing their concerns about the cost of living.
