Interior Designers Reveal the 8 Decorating Rules You Should (Almost) Never Break

Business Insider

  • Break these rules at your own risk:

    • In summary, interior designers often adhere to certain decorating principles that are considered timeless and aesthetically pleasing. However, as design trends come and go, it’s important to remember that some rules can be bent or broken to create unique and personalized spaces.
  • Rule 1: Don’t mix patterns haphazardly.

    • While pairing patterns can add visual interest, doing so in a chaotic manner might result in an overwhelming aesthetic.
  • Rule 2: Always use neutral colours as a base.

    • Using neutrals like whites, greys, and beiges as a canvas allows for easy introduction of accent colours and prevents a space from feeling too cluttered.
  • Rule 3: Avoid placing large furniture in narrow spaces.

    • This rule aims to prevent the space from appearing cramped and unwieldy. Opting for smaller, scale-appropriate furniture is key.
  • Rule 4: Don’t ignore the importance of lighting.

    • Adequate and well-placed lighting is essential for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A combination of task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting is ideal.
  • Rule 5: Keep countertops clear except for decorative items.

    • Cluttered countertops can make a space feel smaller and less organized. Reserve them for necessary items only.
  • Rule 6: Don’t be afraid to mix old and new.

    • Blending vintage pieces with modern elements creates a charming, eclectic look that tells a story.
  • Rule 7: Use art to make a statement.

    • Artwork is a powerful tool for adding personality to a space. Choose pieces that resonate with your style and tell a narrative.
