Ivy Summer in Rome: Five Weeks of Business and Culture

Experience the Behind-the-Scenes of Businesses, Ancient History, and Italian Culture

For five weeks during the summer, Iowa State business students trade lecture halls in Ames for classrooms in Rome as part of the Ivy Summer in Rome program.

Designed for Ivy College of Business students, the program offers four classes that students can choose from. All classes are required for business majors, minors, and certificates, making it accessible to students pursuing any type of business degree.

“It allows students in the Ivy College of Business to engage in core coursework they would normally do [at Iowa State] in an international setting,” said Bruce Kraft, the program coordinator.

Accelerated Learning in a Smaller Setting

The classes held in Rome are accelerated, packing a semester’s worth of content into just five weeks. However, with smaller class sizes, students enjoy a more interactive learning environment.

“You get closer to the professors,” shared Alli Oberbroeckling, a sophomore in accounting and finance. “You can work closer with your peers, and it just creates a great relationship.”

Courses Offered

The courses taught in Rome are all undergraduate business course requirements, covering essential topics in:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Marketing
  • Management
  • International Business

At Iowa State, these same courses typically take place in lecture halls with 100 to 300 students. In Rome, classes were capped at around 15 people, fostering a more personalized learning experience.
