NBCUniversal Cuts Hundreds of Global Streaming Tech Employees
By James Faris
NBCUniversal is letting go of several hundred global streaming technology employees, as reported by Business Insider. This news comes as the company prepares to spin off its streaming and studio businesses from its cable and internet operations next summer.
Comcast's NBCUniversal is downsizing its streaming tech teams, impacting engineering and quality assurance roles globally, according to sources familiar with the changes. While most cuts are at Sky, Comcast's European media arm, some US-based employees at NBCU will also be affected.
"As NBCUniversal and Sky continue to invest in our streaming products and technology, we are proposing changes to our Global Streaming Technology organization... which will impact some roles," an NBCU spokesperson stated. "This evolution will ensure we have the right structure and resources for future growth."
The layoffs were announced on Wednesday, initiating a consultation process required by UK labor laws, ensuring an immediate halt to dismissals. Employees expressed uncertainty about the company's future as it transitions away from Comcast.
"Layoffs on the tech side make me question how we will hit our big goals for 2027, such as decoupling from Comcast and incorporating ITV into the platform," shared a Peacock tech employee.
