Beyond party affiliation, there are some lesser-known loyalties tied to lawmakers in Washington, DC.
Greek life fraternities and sororities, which often dominate social life in colleges and universities across the US, also have some of the strongest footprints in the Capitol.
In the 119th Congress, just under a third of US senators are affiliated with a Greek organization, according to the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC), which aims to "help more Greek alumnae get elected to the House or Senate for the first time."
In years with congressional races throughout the country, the political action committee — often nicknamed the 'Frat PAC' — can play a significant financial role.
In the 2023-24 election cycle, the PAC raised over $900,000. Today, it has raised over $650,000 for the 2025-26 cycle, toward a $1 million goal.
While funding goes toward the campaigns of Greek-life alumni, the committee does not align with one party over the other. FSPAC said that in the 2023-24 cycle, 52% of funds went to Republican candidates and 48% to Democratic candidates out of the 97 congressional campaigns it donated to.
Beyond nationally organized fundraising, Greek life organizations also offer their lifelong members access to a network of powerful connections in the Capitol and beyond.
