Iconic Waverly Business Soprano's Market Receives Facelift with State Grant
Elmira Star-Gazette - Jeff Murray
Soprano's Market, a beloved Waverly institution for over 50 years, has undergone a significant transformation with the help of a NY Forward grant. This state-funded initiative aims to revitalize local communities, and Soprano's is one of the latest success stories.
The Village of Waverly secured a $4.5 million grant through the NY Forward program, a companion to the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, which has already benefited the City of Elmira and other Southern Tier communities.
The market's $727,000 renovation was partly funded by the grant, with $420,000 specifically allocated for the project. The improvements include:
- A new outdoor patio
- Enhanced site lighting
- Energy-efficient siding and insulation
- Complete roof replacement
- Rehabilitation of the parking lot
"For over half a century, our family has dedicated itself to serving the Waverly community," said owner Margaret Soprano, expressing gratitude to Governor Kathy Hochul, Empire State Development, the Department of State, and local leaders. "These investments ensure our business can continue to bring people together for generations to come."
The NY Forward grant in Waverly is also supporting several other initiatives:
- Renovation of East Waverly Park: This includes the creation of a family-oriented recreation facility with pickleball courts, a splash pad, trails, a softball field, basketball court, playground, new parking, and restroom/kitchen rehabilitation.
- Streetscape Improvements on Broad Street: Enhanced crosswalks, new sidewalks, and street lighting will improve walkability.
- Waverly Waterfront Access and Trails: A new park is being developed along the Chemung River, promoting activities like paddling, boating, fishing, and hiking.
- Small Project Fund: This fund assists local businesses with building renovations, facades, interior buildouts, equipment, awnings, and signage.
Waverly Mayor Keith Correll expressed his appreciation for the grant's impact, stating, "The transformation of Soprano's Market is incredible, and we look forward to the other renovation projects."
The Village of Waverly was recognized as a Southern Tier NY Forward winner in 2023, joining other regional beneficiaries, including Montour Falls, Groton, Bath, Dryden, Stamford, Margaretville, the Town of Urbana, and the Village of Hammondsport.
"Investments in community staples like Soprano's Market are a priority for Governor Hochul's NY Forward program," emphasized Empire State Development's Hope Knight. "We are revitalizing downtowns, creating vibrant communities, and laying the groundwork for future economic growth."
