Part of marketing’s role involves delivering information. However, modern marketing practices have shifted towards extracting data from users.
The introduction of digital advertising a decade ago presented marketers with new opportunities. Targeted messaging and personalized content seemed like a win-win scenario.
Yet, what followed was:
- A decline in marketing effectiveness
- Widespread distrust of marketing, both online and offline
- C-Suite executives questioning marketers’ capabilities
- Missed opportunities in digital marketing
Instead of enhancing engagement, tracking has led to more intrusive, disliked, and avoided marketing.
Industry Scandals and Deception
The marketing and advertising sectors are plagued by:
- Data breaches
- Digital ad fraud
- Social media fraud
- Bot activity
- Personal data misuse
Much of this stems from the practice of secretly tracking users online without their knowledge or consent, a euphemism for spying.
It’s time to address ethical concerns and the consequences of ‘marketing by surveillance’ which has fueled intolerance, prejudice, and hate.
Understanding Ad Tracking
Ad tracking involves monitoring users’ online activities. Tracking software records website visits, content viewed, interactions, and duration spent on a site. This data is then fed into algorithms that learn from it and influence what content and ads are displayed to users.
These algorithms shape our digital experiences on various platforms, affecting our news feeds, ad placements, and media consumption.
