Retailers are Making Returns Harder
A carpet seller taught me why that’s a mistake | Gene Marks - The Guardian
Retailers are making returns harder. This is a trend that, in my experience, has been led by certain retailers who have realized they can increase sales and reduce costs by making the return process more difficult for customers. But this strategy is a mistake. While it may seem to boost profits in the short term, it ultimately alienates customers and hurts business in the long run.
As previously mentioned, the carpet seller who shared their policy with me highlights this issue well. They had recently implemented a strict return policy that made it nearly impossible for customers to return items, even when they were clearly defective or didn’t meet expectations. This, however, backfired. Customers took to social media and online forums to share their negative experiences, resulting in significant PR damage and lost sales.
In light of the above, it’s worth noting that happy customers are more likely to return and recommend a business to others, fostering growth and loyalty. Making returns difficult can lead to customer frustration, damaging brand reputation and potentially driving away valuable repeat business.
