Retired Man Tries to Spend More Money, Mostly Fails

Overview

Two years ago, Mr. Money Mustache sparked debate when he wrote about trying to spend more money, even purchasing a Tesla. He thought, "I’m such an enlightened middle-aged Badass, adjusting habits and realigning myself at the snap of my fingers. Onward to the next forty-eight years of the Good Life!"

The Experiment

Over the past two years, he indulged in:

  • Stylish dining experiences
  • Hotel stays based on their appeal, not price
  • Premium airline seats
  • Shopping at Whole Foods, alongside his usual Sam’s Club and Costco trips

He attended numerous concerts, explored new places, and socialized with friends, enjoying a year filled with adventure.

The Results

Despite this flashy spending, his budget remained relatively stable. His overall spending increased, especially in travel, but it could still be sustained by a $1 million investment nest egg, which is significantly higher than his current investments.

Conclusion

Although he didn’t fully achieve the spending levels recommended by MMM, he found genuine joy in the abundance mindset and looks forward to more life experiments. He emphasizes the importance of comparing spending, tips, and tricks, especially as he nears two decades of early retirement.

Budget Breakdown

  • Groceries: $5,960.39 (including half the time for him and his young adult son, and guests)
  • Restaurants: $2,243.59 (for special occasions)
  • Travel: $6,158.77 (including business travel for events like Camp Fi)
  • Utilities: $1,909.51
  • Amazon/House: $3,554.10 (75% for construction materials for clients)
