Paris business owners are picking up the pieces after a weekend of riots that left their shops looted and damaged.
"When I got back, they'd taken everything." — a shopkeeper in Paris, describing the aftermath of the riots.
On Saturday, protests over the cost of living turned violent, with rioters clashing with police, setting vehicles ablaze, and ransacking businesses, particularly in the trendy Marais district. Employees at a boutique fashion brand described the scene as "dystopian," with tear gas seeping into the store.
As I cycled through the city on Sunday, the path of destruction became more apparent, culminating at the intersection of Place de République in the 3rd, 10th, and 11th arrondissements, where some of the most severe violence occurred.
I spoke with several shop owners and employees along the way, who shared their experiences and assessed the damage.

One shop owner, at a gold-buying shop, told me she had to close early due to the violence.
