LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Road closures around the damaged DoubleTree hotel have significantly impacted local businesses, leading to reduced customer traffic and sales.

Rolando Sauceda, a 32-year veteran restaurant owner on Constantinople Street, expressed his concern:

“Well, sales have dropped. Normally, on Sundays, it’s busy with families, but now, because of the hotel, we’ve seen less movement and foot traffic.”

Sauceda sympathized with businesses still closed and suggested the city offer support to help cover their costs during the closures.

City Evaluates Next Steps

Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino discussed the situation with the city manager, set deadlines, and continues to communicate with hotel ownership. He emphasized the need for structural integrity assessments and safety measures:

“The building’s structural integrity has been questioned, and ownership is working to reinforce and stabilize it... If the building cannot be safely stabilized, we must proceed with controlled demolition.”

Trevino prioritized community safety as the city’s top concern.

Julian Gonzalez, a resident nearby, confirmed police advice to avoid the area due to structural instability concerns. He hoped for a closure adjustment to allow greater access for residents.

Disrupted Shopping Experiences

Jesus Gutierrez shared his experience finding a usually accessible store blocked off:

“You can’t go in, you can’t carry what you’re going to buy... It’s all to avoid an accident.”

He expressed hope for a swift resolution to allow businesses to reopen fully.
