Schenectady Costume Business to Relocate in 2027

Schenectady County

The Costumer, a theatrical costume provider in Schenectady, will be moving out of its Mohawk Harbor storefront in 2027, the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority announced on Wednesday.

According to the board of directors, the retail outlet will move into the former CVS space in the Center City building on State Street. The company's headquarters will remain on Barrett Street, but this new location will serve as its retail outlet, and the move will happen once renovations are complete. For this season, however, the business will remain at its current location.

"We look forward to another great Halloween and Christmas at the Harbor but could not pass up the opportunity to lease the former CVS in the heart of downtown near four downtown theaters and the growing Jay Street Marketplace," CEO and President of The Costumer, Deshannee (DD) Johnice, expressed.

The business, founded in 1917, has gained a national reputation, especially for its rental business that caters to scholastic theater programs across the country. Each year, over 50,000 students rent costumes from The Costumer.
