Showing up for the businesses that make Bloomington home - City of Bloomington MN (.gov)

As We Embrace the Holiday Season

I want to highlight what makes Bloomington truly special: the individuals who invest their time, talent, and aspirations into our community.

Our small businesses are the cornerstone of Bloomington. They are owned by our neighbors, employ our residents, and add vibrancy to our neighborhoods. Supporting them strengthens the entire community.

This year, the City has actively supported local businesses through the Hatch Bloomington Loves Local small business grant program. Five Bloomington businesses were awarded funding to foster their growth. The quality of this year's applicants showcases the strength and diversity of Bloomington's small business community. Ten businesses progressed to the final pitch event, and their ideas and dedication to Bloomington left a lasting impression on the judges. As a result, the Bloomington Port Authority contributed an additional $24,000, bringing the program's total to $124,000.

We also hosted the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit in Bloomington for the first time, celebrating immigrant entrepreneurs, facilitating idea sharing, and strengthening connections across our business community. This event was particularly significant given the challenges many immigrant-owned businesses and members of our immigrant community have faced this year. We have a responsibility to support and welcome one another.

The City, in collaboration with Hennepin County, is launching a new initiative that will incentivize residents to shop at locally owned businesses by offering rewards for eligible purchases.

You don't have to wait for specific programs like Small Business Saturday on November 28th to make a difference. You can start now by purchasing gift cards, dining at local restaurants, shopping at neighborhood businesses, and sharing your love for local businesses with friends. Every purchase is a vote for the type of community we want to build—a strong, connected, and welcoming Bloomington.
