Pubs, hotels and gyms in Wales to get 30% business rates cut (15 September 2026)
Huw Thomas, Wales business correspondent, reported that the Welsh government will implement a 30% cut in business rates for pubs, hotels, and leisure venues from April 2027.
First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth emphasized the move's aim to support businesses and foster community thriving. The cut, funded by a rise in rates for highest-value properties, will benefit small and medium-sized businesses with rateable values below £51,000.
This initiative follows a similar announcement by Prime Minister Andy Burnham for England, offering a 20% business rates cut for pubs, social clubs, and live music venues, also effective from April 2027.
UK Hospitality Cymru welcomed the decision but expressed ongoing taxation challenges for businesses. Finance Minister Elin Jones noted that the 30% cut will replace the existing 15% temporary rate reduction for hospitality.
