Sports: A $1 Trillion Industry

Sports is a $1 trillion business. More students are embracing the action, especially at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver).

A Booming Industry

As the global sports industry thrives, enrollment in MSU Denver’s Sport Management program has more than doubled in the past six years. New stadiums are springing up worldwide, including one soon in Denver, and women's sports are attracting record audiences. This growth is reflected in the industry's staggering global revenue projections:

  • $2.3 trillion in 2025, expected to grow to $3.7 trillion by 2030 (Global Institute of Sport).
  • Approximately $1 trillion contributed by the U.S. (New York Times, 2025).

A Magnet for Talent

This surge in popularity has drawn a new generation of students, many of them college athletes and others with a deep passion for sports. MSU Denver's Sport Management program offers them a launchpad for careers in this thriving field.

“We are growing by leaps and bounds,” says Jay Martyn, Ph.D., assistant professor of Sport Management.

A Diverse Range of Opportunities

Students like Mia Accomazzo, who grew up in Phoenix, are driven by more than just numbers. Accomazzo, an avid volleyball player and fantasy sports enthusiast, found inspiration when she learned her friend’s father worked for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Kris Abrams-Draine, a Denver Broncos player, exemplifies the success within the industry. His interception against the Seattle Seahawks showcases the excitement that sports bring to fans worldwide.
