OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The sudden shutdown of a social media site has an Omaha business owner baffled. It’s an issue faced by others who rely on Facebook and Instagram to get their message out.
"Right now I’m sitting at close to 12,000 people that follow me on that account and people notice I’ve been gone. I’ve had calls right away asking what happened to you, are you OK?” said Shannon Bingham, business owner and speaker.
The former Mrs. Nebraska co-owns a salon and boutique and gives dozens of speeches across the country on how to grow a small business. But the sudden shutdown of her Instagram account two weeks ago shrank her vital contacts.
"Yes, to be able to push my brand out there and build my business, it’s definitely gone dark," Bingham said.
Staff also affected by lost reach
The rest of the staff at the salon and boutique also rely on the social media word of mouth that Shannon’s account provides.
Alia Orsi is one of 15 stylists at the salon.
"Yeah, it helps me reach more people than I would be able to on my own for sure. I think she’s very helpful with that," Orsi said.
But Bingham says Instagram hasn’t been helpful in explaining why her account got disabled, except a post saying activity on it doesn’t follow Meta’s community standards.
"I really want Meta to pay attention to what they are doing to people’s livelihoods, and it’s frustrating as a business owner because you are just at their whim," Bingham said.
A promoter of good communication in business, the entrepreneur wants better communication from Instagram and Meta, starting with a call from a real person who can explain why her account is disabled.
Bingham says her 10-year-old daughter has a parent-supervised Facebook account, which Meta disabled for one day but then put back online. She’s unsure if that triggered the business Instagram account to be shut down for going on three weeks.
Several emails were sent to the Meta media contact address with no response so far.
