Vermonters Let Social Media Guide Their Dining Choices

Vermonters are increasingly letting social media influence their dining decisions. Food influencer videos, though entertaining, can significantly impact where people choose to eat next, with one viral video potentially connecting a small business to millions.

Social Media’s Impact on Dining:

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) — Social media is reshaping how Vermonters dine out. One viral video can propel a small business to fame and success.

Content Creator’s Story:

Social media content creator Winnie Adamson recommends new restaurants as a way to recover from an eating disorder. She documents her culinary adventures on TikTok under the handle Winnie Eats Food, promoting places like pizza joints and coffee shops. Her goal is to spread positivity and encourage trying local businesses.

"I think it’s better to support local businesses," Adamson says, "and I’m not going to trash anything that I eat because I don’t want to tank a business for no reason."

Audience Reaction:

University of Vermont student Sadie Lewis appreciates social media recommendations but prefers personal experiences over influencer reviews:

"If I look at restaurants, I ask through the grapevine; I find it easier to ask people their actual experiences since things can be kind of enhanced on social media," she says.

Benefits for Small Businesses:

For establishments like Clover Cafe in South Burlington, social media attention brings in new customers. The videos continue to drive traffic long after the camera stops rolling.

"I always look up on TikTok or Instagram where are all the coffee shops in Burlington," shares customer Abba Weimer, "so when food influencers post about us for locals or travelers, it gives us a wider reach."
