The Fauquier County Board of Supervisors has approved a special permit for a proposed pet aquamation facility in Bealeton.
Applicants Jessica and Daniel Keaton
The Keatons sought the special permit to operate their business, Water Wings Pet Aquamation, a cremation service for companion animals that utilizes a chemical, water-based process called alkaline hydrolysis.
Alkaline Hydrolysis Process
The process uses a combination of flowing water and alkalinity to accelerate the natural breakdown of tissues, resulting in softer, whiter, and lighter remains than traditional flame-based cremation.
Business Location and Facilities
The business, located at 6342 Mintbrook Lane, includes a historic farmhouse, a detached garage, three sheds, gravel parking, and a pond.
Approval and Conditions
The application was approved unanimously on October 8 with a condition that the Water and Sanitation Authority perform bi-annual inspections. The facility's wastewater will be treated before entering the public sewer system.
According to a staff report, the aquamation process offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cremation, as it avoids the use of fire and results in minimal waste.
