Baylor's Rich Homecoming Tradition

Baylor boasts being the first homecoming in the United States, a tradition dating back to 1909 that has spread throughout the state and the country. With football playing a vital role, the Bears cherish their part in this history.

"Being a part of this tradition is just second to none," said junior offensive lineman Koltin Sieracki. "Being the original homecoming in the entire United States, that’s unreal. ... It goes back to high school in Texas and being a part of that."

As Baylor prepares for its 100th homecoming game, its focus remains firmly on the upcoming matchup against Iowa State.

"I want these guys to take a lot of pride in [it being the homecoming game]," said interim head coach Joe Klanderman. "However, their journey got them here. ... I’m not worried about what we have done or what happened in 2024 or 25. That doesn’t matter. It’s this team this week, this game, against that opponent. And that’s what we’re dialed in on."

Homecoming celebrates the connection between alumni and their alma mater, fostering the idea of the "Baylor family". The annual football game serves as a reunion point.

"For the alumni to be able to come back home, I hope we can get a great atmosphere and put on a great performance for everybody," said junior quarterback DJ Lagway.

Following a 17-6 loss to TCU, Baylor seeks to regain the support of its fans with a homecoming win.

"A lot of guys that are calling this home now for the first time, and some guys that have been in the program for a long time, and the fan base needs something to rally around," noted Klanderman. "So, we’re going to go out there on Saturday morning and show you the full capacity of the Baylor Bears."

The loss was attributed to the Bears becoming complacent leading up to the game. They aim to correct that mindset.

"We can’t get complacent," said Lagway. "We got to go out there and just go with one another every play and focus on the moment, be in the present."

Klanderman emphasizes a straightforward approach, focusing on energy and passion rather than specific strategies.

"We’re going to do the same thing we did last week, is try to get those guys to play with energy and passion," he said. "The results will take care of themselves."

Iowa State, coming off a victory over Oklahoma State, presents a formidable challenge. The Cyclones aim to remain grounded, recognizing the potential of every opponent.

"It can gas your head up and tell you that you’re better than you are," warned Sieracki. "You can’t believe that you’re better than anyone on the field because anyone can go get it on any given day."

Baylor faces Iowa State at 11 a.m. Saturday at McLane Stadium, with the game broadcast on FS1.
