Ivis, an immigrant from Cuba, launched a small business with the support of HIAS Economic Advancement Fund. Upon arriving in the United States in 2022, she brought over a decade of experience in the beauty industry and a vision to build something of her own.

“I have always had dreams of learning to become an entrepreneur,” she shared. “Seeing the opportunities in this country and seeking a better life for my family, I decided to start this business.”

That dream materialized into Aurea Wellness Spa, a boutique spa offering head spas, scalp massages, facials, waxing, and more. However, the path was not without challenges. From navigating social media marketing to understanding U.S. tax laws, Ivis embraced each obstacle as an opportunity to grow.

“The challenges I faced have helped me advance in this new phase of my life,” she reflected.

With a $20,000 loan from HIAS Economic Advancement Fund (EAF), Ivis covered startup costs for equipment, inventory, marketing, and rent. The loan enabled her to create a welcoming space where clients can relax, heal, and feel confident.

Founded in 2022, EAF provides refugees and displaced entrepreneurs with access to capital and business support to launch and grow their ventures. To date, EAF has served over 800 entrepreneurs, providing over $2.2 million in funding to refugee entrepreneurs across the U.S., with nearly half of the loans going to women-owned businesses. EAF is a part of HIAS’ economic empowerment work, assisting refugees and immigrants as they rebuild their lives in a new country.

“We’ve seen time and again that when newcomers have the tools to build their own success, it benefits not only their families and communities but also the entire nation,” said Phillip Bailey, HIAS EAF Executive Director.

Ivis's story serves as a testament that with the right support, newcomers can not only rebuild their lives but also contribute to their communities through the establishment of small businesses.
