10 Things People Get Wrong About Being a Long-Haul Flight Attendant
As a long-haul flight attendant for almost a decade, I've encountered many misconceptions about the job. Here are 10 things people often get wrong:
"It's all glamour and free flights," they say. While free flights and access to amazing destinations are perks, the reality is far from glamorous. Long hours, jet lag, and constant travel take a toll on your body and personal life.
"Flight attendants just serve drinks," another common misconception. We are responsible for the safety and comfort of all passengers, which includes handling emergencies, providing medical aid, and ensuring everyone follows safety protocols.
“You must love meeting new people.” While interacting with diverse passengers is a part of the job, not everyone enjoys constant social interaction. We have personal time and boundaries, just like anyone else.
"The pay is incredible." The truth is, despite the occasional tip, the base pay for flight attendants is often low, especially considering the demanding nature of the job.
"You get to travel anywhere you want." While we do have access to discounted flights, planning personal travel around work schedules can be difficult, and not all destinations are easily accessible.
This list only scratches the surface of the myths surrounding flight attendant work. For a more nuanced understanding, read on.
