SatPort Acquires Speedcast's Teleport Business
SatPort Infrastructure has completed the acquisition of Speedcast’s teleport business, encompassing 12 teleports and associated infrastructure. Backed by EQT Infrastructure, SatPort aims to become a carrier-neutral platform for satellite ground infrastructure.
The deal comprises 12 teleports across 11 countries and five continents, integrating over 100 employees into the SatPort team. Additionally, Speedcast entered into a long-term infrastructure services agreement, becoming a SatPort customer. Financial details of the acquisition, announced on November 3, remain undisclosed.
Speedcast stated that this agreement allows them to focus resources on the SIGMA intelligent edge network management platform and transition towards a leaner operational model.
EQT Infrastructure established SatPort as a new portfolio company during its unsuccessful bid to acquire Eutelsat’s ground network infrastructure. Subsequently, SatPort secured a partnership with Telesat to build multiple landing stations globally, adhering to Telesat’s design specifications.
SatPort now positions itself as a fully operational, carrier-neutral global platform with a network of teleports.
"We believe the next phase of growth will be driven by independent, specialized infrastructure platforms serving multiple customers at scale," said Carl Sjölund, Partner at EQT Infrastructure. "With SatPort, we are creating a global leader in this emerging category. This acquisition is a significant step towards that goal."
SatPort is led by CEO Joe Spytek, formerly the CEO of Speedcast, who steered the company out of bankruptcy in 2021.
