US Stock Futures Tumble as Democrats Secure Midterm Election Wins
Wall Street faced fresh uncertainty as election results signaled a shift in control of Congress. U.S. stock futures fell sharply with the Democrats achieving key victories in the midterm elections, according to the Fox News Decision Desk, which projected the party will control both chambers of Congress.
- S&P 500 futures decreased by 1.3%
- Nasdaq-100 futures dropped 2.2%
- Futures linked to the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.8%
The Fox News Decision Desk predicted that the Democrats will dominate the House of Representatives and gain control of the U.S. Senate after winning crucial congressional races nationwide.
Implications for Markets and Debt
The results added to uncertainty on Wall Street, with investors grappling with the potential impact of a shift in Washington's power dynamics on various sectors:
- Taxes
- Government spending
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Big Tech
- Defense
- Healthcare
- Banking
- Cryptocurrency regulation
Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo in Singapore, noted to Reuters:
“Markets appear to be pricing in the possibility of a stronger-than-expected Democratic showing, which could temper expectations for further fiscal stimulus.”
Historically, changes in congressional control have not always affected stock performance negatively. According to Ned Davis Research, the S&P 500 rose in five out of eight midterm cycles since 1930 when the president's party lost control of the House.
Prediction markets had increasingly indicated Democratic control of both chambers as election results unfolded, with over $1.48 billion wagered on the midterm elections.
Chanana expressed investor concerns regarding potential Democratic control of Congress, particularly its impact on AI and Big Tech regulation, given rising valuations and AI-related spending. However, she suggested:
“Lower Treasury yields could offer some support, so the initial sell-off may not be prolonged.”
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield decreased by 6 basis points, settling at 4.906%.
Global Market Reactions
The U.S. dollar weakened, with the euro and British pound gaining against it, while the dollar index dropped by 0.32%.
Overseas markets also experienced declines:
- Japan's Nikkei fell by 3%
- South Korea's KOSPI dropped by 1.6%
- A broad index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan showed a 0.5% decrease.
