BOONES MILL, Va. – A longtime family business in Boones Mill is preparing to close its farm stand after years of rising costs made it increasingly difficult to stay profitable.
"You can only take so much on the end of the chin before you say, ‘Hey, I’m done,’" Woods said.
Woods said increasing expenses, including fuel, supplies, electricity, and health insurance, have added to the financial pressure. He also pointed to changing customer habits and the rising cost of replacing produce as challenges for the business.
"It’s a bittersweet. I hate it. I mean, it’s what my father did," Woods said.
